The 4,000 houses will be built on 308 hectares of land near Kg Mentiri in Bandar Seri Begawan. This is the largest contract ever awarded under the National Housing Scheme and reflects His Majesty's commitment to providing affordable housing for the people of this country.
The project will significantly reduce the waiting list for affordable housing besides providing a much needed boost to the local economy.
The project will be implemented by UEM Builders Bhd, an international contractor owned by Khazanah Nasional, the investment arm of the Malaysian Government.
UEM Builders was appointed with the consent of His Majesty following an international open tender which attracted the interest of 40 contractors from 12 countries from Asean and beyond including China, Korea, India, Iran and Australia.
The appointment of UEM Builders was based on its track record in implementing large-scale infrastructure projects including in Malaysia, Qatar and India and the extremely competitive tender price submitted. In 2008, UEM Builders had a turnover exceeding two billion Malaysian Ringgit.
"The BEDB is honoured to be entrusted with this important project and will work resolutely towards ensuring that it is implemented on time and to the standards required," said Dato Paduka Timothy Ong, the Acting Chairman of BEDB.
